Workers in the restaurant industry do not return to the industry

KANSAS CITY, MO – Trying to juggle life with plates and silverware in their hands, some workers in the restaurant industry have to choose between helping keep doors open and their peace of mind.

Sydney Osborn and other employees spent much of their time inside the PeachTree cafeteria during the pandemic.

“We also have jobs outside of our regular jobs. We are all mothers, we are all students – we are everything, ”said Osborn.

She is the Assistant Manager at the PeachTree Cafeteria location on 12th Street and Brooklyn Avenue.

In these difficult times, the employees of the PeachTree cafeteria are simply trying to make a living on understaffing and long hours.

“You know your bottom line is different so you try to juggle that and when you don’t have a lot of jobs it’s just me and the other managers so you spend a lot of time here. Osborn said.

However, as the Delta variant continues to spread, customers breaking masks and social distancing guidelines have prompted a few PeachTree employees to quit.

“Our lobby is closed, it was closed during the pandemic, and a lot of people are not happy or happy with that. We understand that some people get vaccinated, but we still follow protocols and stuff like that, ”Osborn said.

For managers and owners, it’s hard to try to bring in more workers to help so many people return to dinner in person.

“Due to technology and the pandemic, many other industries are more flexible and restaurants have kind of fallen into the totem poll,” said Derrick Wilmore, manager and grandson of cafeteria owner PeachTree.

“So that’s one of the biggest reasons, or one of the biggest hits we’re taking, is this labor shortage,” Wilmore said. “It’s the fact that people don’t believe that they can make a decent living working here.”

As the workload increases and the workforce shrinks, employees at both PeachTree Cafeteria locations say they can handle it all, but ask for understanding as they try to keep the doors open, the queues open. short wait and full stomach.

“Of course we are here to serve people and provide great food, we are here for you guys so please indulge us. We are doing our best and trying to make it happen during this pandemic, ”said Wilmore.
